Do you dream of change in 2021?

Wow, the new year is already upon us. Who isn’t relieved that 2020 is coming to an end? With everything we’ve endured this year it has certainly been a hard one to navigate. I don’t know about you, but keeping my focus and staying at peace was a struggle among all the upheaval. There were times when I questioned our very exsistence, I wondered how long it would be before we ourselves would become extinct, and by our own hands. Watching the fighting and the division around the world certainly was not encouraging.

The question for 2021? Will we come together or will we remain divided and do to ourselves what we’ve done to numerous other species? Will we render ourselves extinct because we refuse to live peaceably? Because we refuse to acknowledge what we’re doing to our own planet?

We live on a beautiful planet that we are destroying. We are the only species I know that destroys it’s own habitat. We call ourselves more intelligent and more evolved than other species inhabiting the earth, but we continue to behave in a way that indicates otherwise. We’ve tipped the scales of balance in nature driving our wildlife to extinction. We stand on the precipice now, looking into the abyss. Will we leap into the abyss continuing in our ignorance, or will we opt for change?

The human race has been one of hate, greed, and destruction all in the name of religion or progress. If something is in our way we destroy it. If someone doesn’t look like we do, think like we do, or have the same belief system we do, we hate them. We judge what we do not understand, condemning others without seeking to know them. Every group, believing that their way is the only way, not realizing, that we all have our own beliefs, and we live according to that belief.

As we live our lives we must do it with respect for those that we share our planet with. We must also do it with an open heart and without being closed off to knew revelations and ideas so that growth can occur. It’s when we become rigid, closed off to knew ideas, and resistant to change that we become hateful and divisive.

Will we choose to stop the madness in 2021? And how do we stop the madness and bring peace to our world? I believe it starts within each and every one of us. As individuals seeking peace and love we can project that out into the world. When we choose to live a life of love and peace it will cause a ripple effect and touch the lives others.

This is a crucial time for us. I believe it’s a time when self-reflection and meditation are more beneficial than ever. And more needed then ever. Keeping up with our self-practice brings change in us and ripples out to the rest of the world. Keeping up with our self-practice helps to change the world. If we can walk in peace, shining our light of love to the rest of creation, we make a huge difference, whether we realize it or not. More and more people are waking up and recognizing what’s happening in our world. I believe this is due to the fact that our energy is emmenating outward. We are effecting the majority with our individual growth.

My prayer for 2021 is that we will see a complete reversal in attitudes and people will come together and stop the division, that we as a species will recognise and ackowledge what we’ve done to our planet and seek to change it. That we will all work together in unity to preserve the gift that we have in our planet earth. That we will seek to preserve peace, unity and individuality.

Are You Living the Reiki Principles?

I find that the five Reiki principles of Dr. Usui helps us to attain a higher standard and therefore, attain a higher version of ourselves.”

As Reiki professionals I believe that we are called to live by a higher standard, one of love, understanding and compassion for our fellow human beings.

In today’s world we see so much that goes against these standards, sometimes even within our own profession. I know we are all human and we all fall short, as the saying goes…”to err is human.” We can’t expect perfection from each other, but we most assuredly can expect, that we are consistently seeking to become a better version of ourselves.

I find that the five Reiki principles of Dr. Usui helps us to attain a higher standard and therefore, attain a higher version of ourselves. Living by these principles is what keeps us accountable. It’s a checks and balance system where we can examine ourselves and our motives.

The five principles that Master Usui lived by are one of the first things we are taught when learning Reiki. They are as follows:

Self-practice keeps us operating at our highest potential.”
  • Just for Today, Do not be angry.
  • Just for Today, Do not worry.
  • Just for Today, be Grateful.
  • Just for Today, work with diligence.
  • Just for Today, be kind to people.

We are also taught to keep with a daily self-practice to keep ourselves grounded and balanced. Keeping with a daily self-practice makes these principles easier to carry out. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been able to keep my cool in difficult situations because of my self-practice. This is because I am grounded and in touch with my higher self and my higher purpose. My focus is where it should be- on the greater good.

If we’re not keeping with a self-practice we are more likely to fail in keeping with the Usui principles. We are more easily distracted and lose focus. We’re doing our clients a disservice if we are not taking the time for daily self-practice. It keeps us operating at our highest potential and gives us better perspective. If we don’t have a self practice, then we’re not operating at our highest potential, which enable us to better serve our clients.

Neglecting self-practice prevents us from providing our clients with the Reiki sessions they deserve, sessions of greater impact and sessions that are of the highest benefit. Keeping a proper mind-set is something we work on in our daily self-practice. Without self-practice it’s harder to keep an attitude of compassion, gratitude and peace. How can we provide the highest possible service to our clients, if we have not first taken care of ourselves, to make sure we are coming from a place of compassion, light and love?

If we, as practitioners, truly believe in Reiki as a healing modality, we should then be living it ourselves, by keeping with a consistent self-practice and living the Reiki principles. There’s no such thing as “I don’t have the time.” If you’re seeing clients and you have a growing reiki practice, you need your self-practice more than ever. Reiki is like any other gift or practice, the more you put it to use, the stronger it becomes, and the bigger impact you can make with it.

As a Reiki professional I want to make a greater positive impact for people, and for the world as a whole. I believe that, in seeking to keep ourselves operating at our highest potential, living our highest version, we are doing a greater work in this world and setting a higher standard for others to follow.

As we go out into the world today may we be slow to anger, be without worry, be grateful, be diligent in our work and be kind to all people.

What about our food?

Ok, I know a lot of people won’t want to hear this, but what we put in our mouths does make a difference. In todays world we’re inundated with so many food options but are they all good options? Absolutley not!

We’ve become a society focused on convenience. We want everything now and we don’t want to do it ourselves, right? People have become accustomed to driving through some fast food restuarant window to pick up their meal. How many people actually cook at home? I’ve met people who don’t cook beyond throwing some packaged food into the oven. Ugh! Packaged foods contain so many preservatives and additives it’s scary. Most of these packaged foods contain things that have been found to cause health issues, and yet, they continue to add them.

So, what can you do to eat healthy? Fortunately, this “pandemic” has forced most people to slow down. People have become less likely to go out, not wishing to come into contact with COVID-19. This means you can now take the time to cook at home. This is a perfect time for adjusting your diet and creating a healthier lifestyle.

In Reiki we deal with energy and the flow of energy. Foods play a big part in our energy flow and our well-being. Changing the way we eat can greatly impact our lives. Take myself, for instance, I have had to change my diet several times during my lifetime. It’s been a challenge. Having autoimmune issues can make a person more suseptible to dietary issues. I’ve given up the sugar, the gluten and the dairy. More recently I gave up meat after eating paleo for a few years. I went completely vegan. Unfortunately, I didn’t get enough protien which caused some issues. Now I occasionaly eat farm raised eggs. I am also careful about making sure I get a proper amount of protien in my diet by adding in plenty of seeds, nuts and legumes.

So what’s my point? Everybody is different, but certain foods can bog us down and cause energy blockages. Dairy is a good example of an energy blocker. Dairy can cause major blockages in our system and make us feel sluggish. I felt so much better after giving up dairy. Now I can’t eat dairy at all, turns out it totally messes with my digestive tract. Try giving it up for a couple of weeks and re-introducing it. I think you’ll be surprised at the results. Most people have intolerances to dairy and don’t even realize it.

I’m not going to tell you you have to eat vegan, but I am going to tell you you probably need more whole vegetables in your diet and less processed food. Making the change to healthier foods can be a challenge, but it’s absolutely worth it! You’re body will thank you. I know from experience what diet change can do. I feel so much better when I eat the foods that are right for my body. If I stray and eat the wrong foods, I pay for it. I immediately feel the consequences of my actions and think twice the next time around.

So don’t feel pressured to make drastic changes immediately. Take things one step at a time and start incorporating healthier foods into your diet. You may need to experiment. We’re all different with different body types. What works for me may not work for you.

If you’re one of those people that has to do things “all or nothing” then do it. Go through your kitchen and get rid of the bad then go shopping with a list of healthy foods you’ll enjoy. You don’t have to completely deprive yourself of the occasional treat, though I do suggest you look for a healthier version. Sweets and carbs are very addictive, once you start it’s hard to stop.

When you incorporate healthy eating into your life you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel. Your enegy flow will improve along with your attitude, sleep and physical well-being. We could all use that during these unpredictable times.

What about Essential Oils?

Today I want touch on some of the benefits of essential oils, especially when dealing with the pain associated with autoimmune disease. Autoimmune disease can cause muscle pain and joint pain that can make ordinary tasks seem daunting. Even getting dressed can become a challenge.

I have found that essential oils can play a big part in relieving some of the pain associated with my autoimmune disease. My hope is that you’ll find some of this information helpful in dealing with your own issues.

This past week I had a job to do that was a challenge for my body physically. I was painting a logo on a wall which required looking up a lot and was causing some stress to my neck. I had already started the day with a headache and neckache so I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to work the following day.

Much too my surprise I felt better the next day upon waking. What had I done to produce this effect? Well, I did take my essential oils. Clove and On Gaurd, to be specific. On Gaurd is a proprietary blend providing a natural and effective immune support when used internally. It promotes healthy immune functioning. Clove has great antioxident properties and helps support cardiovascular health. I took a drop of each of these the day of my headache when I began the work.

Upon waking the next day and being profoundly surprised by feeling better, I decided to also use my eucalyptus/peppermint oil rub that I make for sore muscles. I knew I was going to be working at that wall again and I wanted to be sure I felt as good as possible. That did the trick, I felt really good all day.

Essential oils have been a major help to me in dealing with the issues associated with my autoimmune disease. I love them so much I’ve opened my own doTERRA account. They’re the only ones I know that create On Guard and Breathe, two proprietary blends that I use frequently. I think I would be lost without these blends. They’ve offered me some much needed relief when there was none to be found elsewhere. In the future I may consider becoming one of their wellness advocates.

Sorry if this sounds like a sales pitch, but I can’t begin to express just how much these oils have really helped. If you don’t have access to doTERRA you could try experimenting with what you do have available, just make sure they’re a high quality oil. I’m sure you can find something that works for you and your specific needs. Do some research on which oils are beneficial for your own health issues and start cautiously experimenting (you may want to consult your physician). You may be pleasantly surprised! It sure beats taking a pill every time you’re feeling that pain. It can help prevent that pain from even showing up.

Will Reiki help my autoimmune disease?

Not everyone is aware of Reiki and the benefits it can offer. Reiki helps to fascilitate healing in our bodies. When we recieve Reiki on a daily basis it can effect our over-all health and well-being.

I was rescently blind-sided by some unexpected health issues. Being someone with autoimmune disease, I sometimes have flare-ups. I’d been doing quite well for some time though, and completely took it for granted. I’ll never do that again!

I was pushing myself beyond my limitations and my physical body retaliated. I ended up with a case of Barr Epstein and Strep. I wondered why I was so exhausted all of the time. I was stressing myself out trying to accomplish all of the things I wanted to accomplish instead of just allowing things to flow naturally. Getting sick made me take a step back and get some much needed rest. My body gave me no choice but to take a break. In fact, I’m still recovering. I will not (according to doctors) be able to recover fully though.

My illness and flare-up caused permanent damage and I am now required to live with COPD. I am intent on sending it back where it came from though, or at the very least, getting it completely under control so I can continue to live an active life. A hard lesson learned.

When taking proper care of yourself Reiki can make a difference. It certainly does for me. But when I’m not paying attention to my needs and what my body is trying to tell me, there’s a price to pay. I somehow forgot about this. I took it for granted that I would continue to feel good no matter how hard I pushed. Wrong!

If you’re pushing too hard and you have an autoimmune issue (or not) it’s time to take a step back before you pay the price. Know what your limitations are. It’s absolutely in your best interest to take a rest when you need it. If it requires saying “no” to something or someone, then say “no”, without feeling guilty. Your health is the most important thing you have, make sure you keep it. If your health is already compromised then all the more reason to step back and take care of “you”.

There are several ways you can take care of yourself.

  1. Get plenty of rest
  2. Take the time to eat healthy meals
  3. Spend some quality “me” time (could be meditation, a walk in nature, or reading a book)
  4. Release the things that aren’t for your highest good (things you may have said “yes” to when you should have said “no”)
  5. Get some form of exercise
  6. Spend time with friends and family (not the toxic kind)
  7. Go get a massage
  8. Go get a Reiki treatment/ Chakra Balance
  9. Take a bubble bath once in a while
  10. Use essential oils to promote healing and relaxation

These are just a few recommendations. Your personal self-care is going to depend on your interests and what makes you feel good. Whatever de-stresses you is what’s going to work for you. Don’t wait for your body to retaliate, make sure you have balance in your life now.

If you have a specific illness ask your doctor if he/she has any information to help (although most western doctors won’t recommend any holistic healing methods). You can also do some research for yourself, just make sure you’re taking it from a reliable source.

Are you ready for cold and flu season?

I can feel the change in the weather as we move into the harvest season. Fall weather brings cold and flu season. For those of us with autoimmune issues, this can be a trying time. We try our best to stay healthy but it’s a constant battle. We eat healthier, try and get plenty of rest, and take care of ourselves but life happens. We get tired. We get worn out and fatigued creating a prime opportunity for illness to set in. How many winters have you spent fighting the common cold, or the flu, or both?

I thought I’d share some of the holistic approaches for fighting illness that I’ve found helpful over the years. There are certain things that I consider necessary for the season’s medicinal arsenal. These are my “must-haves”.

Essential oils have great health benefits!

1. Peppermint Oil- an absolute “must-have” for the coming season. Peppermint oil can be diffused to help clear up the sinuses. If you don’t have a diffuser, you can boil a pot of water, remove it from the stove and then add a couple of drops of peppermint oil to it. Keep the pot nearby breathing in the steam (not too close, it can burn so be careful).

 I add a few drops of peppermint and eucalyptus oil to a carrier oil and use it as a chest rub to help clear the airways. You can also use a roller bottle for this one. Use 2-3 drops of each oil in a 10ml bottle (filled 3/4 of the way with the carrier oil first).

I also make myself some peppermint tea, especially before bed. This helps clear the sinuses and airways so that I can sleep more comfortably. Peppermint tea is also good for relieving an upset stomach. Loose-leaf or an organic tea brand is recommended.

I also use peppermint for headache relief. I use a 10ml roller bottle for application. I fill it about ¾ full with my carrier oil and then add about 3-5 drops of peppermint oil. How much peppermint oil you add is going to depend on skin sensitivity (you don’t want to burn your skin). I apply my oil to the back of the skull where it connects to the spine, to the temples, and across my forehead just above the brow.

2. Eucalyptus Oil- I’ve already shared the use of eucalyptus as a chest rub, but did you know it can also be used in relieving muscle aches? I create a muscle rub by combining eucalyptus and peppermint oil in a carrier oil ( I use coconut). I don’t use a specific recipe for this rub, I just add a few drops (of each oil) at a time until it feels right for me. I use a little more eucalyptus than I do peppermint. You will need to experiment with this one, everybody is different. Some people have more sensitive skin than others. (I also use this muscle rub to help alleviate muscle pain associated with fibromyalgia). Eucalyptus may also be diffused.

Hot tea for optimal winter health.

3. Echinacea leaf- There’s nothing like some echinacea tea to boost the immune system. If you can’t find loose-leaf, or you prefer ready-made tea bags, look for a quality organic brand. This tea is great even when you’re not sick, as it will aid in boosting the immune system and help prevent illness.

4. Slippery Elm- This makes a great tea for soothing the throat. I use this when I have a sore throat. It helps relieve the soreness so that I can get some much-needed sleep. ‘Traditional medicinals’ makes an organic throat coat with slippery elm in it. It works wonders if you’re looking for something in a tea bag rather than loose-leaf.

5. Keeping Lemon on hand is essential. Lemon is a good natural expectorant. Who doesn’t take comfort in a hot cup of tea with honey and lemon when they’re sick?

6. Don’t forget to take your supplements. I take vitamin supplements regularly, but it’s especially important during cold and flu season. I like to take extra vitamins C, D-3, and B-12 on occasion to make sure my defenses are up. You can check with your doctor as to which supplements you can take. Also, make sure you’re getting the rest you need for your body to sustain optimal health.

I hope you find some of this helpful. Remember to start small with the essential oils, especially if you’re new to them. Always test with a small amount first. Essential oils should always be diluted in a carrier oil before using on your skin. *Ingesting Eucalyptus Oil is not recommended.

Are you finding it difficult to keep your inner peace?

With everything going on today it can seem like a daunting task to keep ourselves in a state of inner peace and calm. If we turn on the T.V. we see violence, slander and hatred. The same thing happens when we get online and scroll through social media. We’re being bombarded with so much negative energy today, how do we overcome it and keep ourselves centered?

Reiki is the perfect way to get back to center. Those of us who practice Reiki every day realize this fact. And yet, we will put off taking our much needed time out. We don’t always take a time out when we need it, claiming that we don’t have the time. We have too much on our “to do” list, or we have too many commitments. So, we tell ourselves we’ll get to it later and put it off.

The problem with this is that we end up over-stressed because we haven’t taken a much-needed break. Combine that with an autoimmune disease, and you could end up with a whole lot of hurt. As someone that suffers from autoimmune issues, I’ve learned that lesson in the “school of hard knocks”. I used to push myself beyond my limitations until I realized, I wasn’t doing myself any favors. In fact, I caused myself more problems, more pain, and got a lot less accomplished.

These days I pace myself and I know when to say “I can’t do anymore, I need a break.” It’s hard at times, I think we all would like to accomplish more than we do, but we’ve got to be realistic and take care of ourselves so we can live a better quality life. Spending daily time in Reiki self-treatment and stopping in between to take a reiki time out when I need it, helps me tremendously. If I sense that I’m beginning to stress, taking that five minute (or even 2 min.) break to re-center is priceless. It actually keeps me healthier and functioning better in all areas of my life. And that’s what we all want, isn’t it?


I’m not saying Reiki is a miracle cure, but it sure is a major player in my health and well-being. Until I found Reiki, my autoimmune disease was constantly knocking me on my ass. I’d be down for days at a time. Reiki has eradicated that for me, for the most part. I’m still prone to having a bad day or two when I’m exposed to something my body doesn’t agree with. I do everything I can to ensure that that doesn’t happen, but this isn’t a perfect world. So, When it does happen, I look to Reiki for healing and inner peace.

Even if you don’t suffer from an autoimmune disease or chronic pain, the events going on around us are enough to drive any sane person completely insane. If we want to be a support to others during this troubling time, then we need to take proper care of ourselves, so that we’re in the right frame of mind and are able to do so.
